What is Meningitis?
Meningitis is an infectious disease of the protective membranes that surround the brain and the spinal cord. It is a very serious condition and if not treated promptly, it can cause severe blood poisoning (sepsis), brain damage and death.
How does Meningitis spread?
Meningitis is usually caused by viral or bacterial infections. Bacterial infection is less common but more severe.
Meningitis is spread through:
- Coughing
- Sneezing
- Kissing
The virus or bacteria that causes meningitis is carried by people in their noses or throat who are not usually ill themselves.
It is recommended that during Hajj and Umrah, pilgrims should maintain good hygiene standards. This includes wearing masks in congested areas and not sharing water bottles or utensils.
